The Sunday Bento - Creative Dissonance, Fixing Shit, The Pharoah Departs, The Church of Music
Playing guitar while falling down stairs, tractor love, a jazz great departs and modes and stuff.
The Bento went missing last week.
I’m blaming a chaotic Melbourne airport as I’d got to the airport 2.5 hours before a flight to write and publish, but it took 2 hrs to check in and get through security due to a stuff up in Hobart with my on-going luggage.
Anyhoo, I’d meant to post the next day but for the past month I’ve been slightly pear-shaped due to a screwed up nerve in my C6-C7 vertebrae that gifts me screeching nerve pain down my right arm and an associated opioid haze.
This was the song I was going to post with that ‘Monday Bento’ so I might as well slot it in here for the sense of my own cerebral continuity.
Creative Dissonance
I love Tom Waits…. love.
I likewise love his guitarist and long-time collaborator Mark Ribot who plays on the song above.
His playing spans a number of genres - jazz, free jazz, cuban and he leans heavily on the unexpected and dissonance …. one of the best descriptions I’ve heard is “he sounds like he is playing guitar while he is falling down a set of stairs”…… and I dig it.
So let us dear reader, take some time to walk with Mark Ribot.
Fixing Shit
I admire people that can fix shit.
I’m not much good at that sort of thing, though I did once take a lawn mower apart and managed to get it back together and working. There were victory laps around the yard.
I’ve been obsessing over this YouTube channel lately - Marty T …. who by the look of things lives up near Havelock in the Marlborough Sounds at the top of the South Island of New Zealand.
He gets tips from local farmers about bulldozers and tractors that have broken down in the bush and have just been dumped.
He then bashes through the bush, fixes them and drives out like a legend.
He is ace.
The Pharoah Departs
Pharoah Sanders died yesterday in Los Angeles.
Godspeed sir…..
The Church of Music
I received a message from Peter Koppes from The Church this week.
I had some close friends (R.I.P. Bags) that used to work for The Church and my old bandmate used to flat with Peter, so I spent many hours around at their Bondi apartment playing music and guitar and indulging in dubious lifestyle choices.
Anyhoo… he sent me some links to his Music Evolution Therapy videos on YouTube which are fantastic…. check them out for some knowledge drops.
And the associated playlist on YouTube here
That’s it for this week amigos… I wish you the finest week imaginable…. if you’re enjoying The Sunday Bento, please feel free to share it around, throw down some comments and suggestions and I’ll see you next week……and remember.
Send it!
I’ve been glacial slow checking in, Dave…but now I’m here, very happy to see the things you eke out, describe, opine on. Onya! JB
